00:01 j-b  xtophe: I do build the installer on win
00:01 xtophe  j-b: i found my problem
00:02 nefrir  j-b: couldn't we use precompiled headers for qt4 ?
00:02 nefrir  because it is soooo slow
00:02 j-b  nefrir: precompiled headers ? you mean precompiled moc ?
00:02 nefrir  dunno under linux but under vc you can precompil headers
00:02 nefrir  .h
00:03 nefrir  preprocess would probably be more correct
00:03 j-b  I don't know what you do mean
00:03 j-b  .hpp => moc.cpp && .hpp
00:03 j-b  moc are not commited
00:03 xtophe  .ui->.h is fast
00:03 nefrir  nope .hpp -> something that is way faster to include ;)
00:03 nefrir  but it may be VC specific
00:04 j-b  nefrir: you mean the Qt Headers ?
00:04 nefrir  yes
00:04 j-b  ahah, no idea on how to do that on gcc
00:04 j-b  I tried to avoid unuseful inclusions in my code though
00:05 nefrir  I think qt4 depends way to much on include/vlc*.h
00:06 nefrir  each time a vlc_*.h is touch nearly everything is compiled again
00:06 nefrir  (not sure it can be avoid but ...)
00:06 j-b  nefrir: vlc_interface.h ?
00:06 nefrir  yes
00:06 nefrir  no
00:06 j-b  Stooopid file
00:06 j-b  arf
00:06 nefrir  like vlc_input.h
00:07 nefrir  or others like that
00:07 j-b  vlc_common, you need it
00:09-!- h07d0q [n=Miranda@dslb-088-065-186-076.pools.arcor-ip.net] has quit ["/away leaving... /join #real-life"]
00:09 j-b  I don't know how to do without vlc_aout, vlc_vout (menus), vlc_common (objects in prefere"nces), vlc_inter* (interaction and common strings), vlc_vlm ( VLM dialog), vlc_meta (media info), vlc_update (update dialog)...
00:09 CIA-50  Laurent Aimar  0.9-bugfix src/video_output/vout_subpictures.c: Fixed SSA subtitles pausing. I used a ugly way to avoid breaking the ABI.
00:10 nefrir  well a big part of the problem comes from the stupidity of c++ whre you have to declare private member of a function in the class declaration
00:10 nefrir  and thus forcing a usless include in the class header file
00:10 dionoea  well it's not stupid
00:10 dionoea  you need to know all the members to know the size
00:10 dionoea  it's a limitation
00:12 nefrir  it is a annoying when you only do new on your class
00:13 CIA-50  Laurent Aimar  master  (6 files in 3 dirs): Fixed SSA subtitles pause. I have modified spu_RenderSubpictures to take a b_paused argument. The calls to pf_pre_render/pf_update_regions could have ...
00:13 tonsofpcs  hey, is there a known issue with not being able to draw soft subs in more than one screen location?
00:13 nefrir  you then have to define an interface(pure virtual class) just to avoid showing them
00:14 nefrir  tonsofpcs: you mean that they overlap ?
00:14 nefrir  if so, fixed in master (1.0)
00:14 dionoea  nefrir: if it's a pure virtual class you still need the implementation class when calling new
00:14 LordRPI  nefrir - use the pImpl idion
00:14 dionoea  s/implemenation/whatever the corect name for non virtual class is
00:14 LordRPI  idiom*
00:15 nefrir  anyway it adds a lot of code to hide the internal members
00:15 nefrir  dionoea: yes, and that's why you then need a provider
00:16 nefrir  and for a simple class, a lot of code
00:16 dionoea  ah, like a function that does the new call?
00:16 nefrir  yep
00:16 dionoea  agreed ;)
00:16 nefrir  new can be overloaded too but I am not sure it would work for it
00:16 nefrir  or if it is simpler
00:17-!- dougiel [n=doug@S0106002129d8d9b8.wp.shawcable.net] has quit [Remote closed the connection]
00:17 dionoea  Well you'd always need to know the size of the full structure to allocate it. Unless you can do some hack like what we have as p_sys in VLC to hide the private members in another sub structure
00:17-!- Ko_deZ [n=mt@062016213048.customer.alfanett.no] has quit ["Konversation terminated!"]
00:18 nefrir  as long as the full size is know where the new call are done you are fine
00:18 nefrir  +n
00:18 tonsofpcs  nefrir - yes, thanks :)
00:18 dionoea  That sounds like something quite out of the scope of C++ to me :)
00:19 dionoea  like compiled templates ... supposed to be possible but I've never seen it work

00:21 Bond365  hi, im using vlc 0.9.2 with windows. when i move the vlc window to my 2nd monitor, the area where the video is shows stays black. i had the same issue with the previous version, but there it worked sometimes, no it dont work at all
00:21 Bond365  is this a known issue or can anyone confirm this?
00:21 dionoea  Bond365: did you try disabling overlay in the video preferences?
00:21 Bond365  *now it dont work at all
00:22 tonsofpcs  bobololo - you're using overlay
00:22 tonsofpcs  :s/bobololo/bond365
00:22 tonsofpcs  sorry bobololo ;)
00:22 tonsofpcs  [although if you're around, i have an ASI-related question]
00:22 j-b  screw the Win32 output
00:22 dionoea  Bond365: in Video, uncheck "Accelerated video output"
00:22 dionoea  then save the prefs
00:22 dionoea  restart the video (or VLC) and try again
00:23 dionoea  j-b: most of our video outputs suck
00:23 dionoea  nobody mantains them
00:23 j-b  xv works not that bad
00:23 j-b  caca is excellent
00:23 Bond365  thx all, without overlay mode it works
00:24 dionoea  well i've seem some recent reports about people having issues with xv in vlc but it working fine in mplayer
00:24 nefrir  the x11/xv plugin does not works really well with xinerama
00:24 Bond365  how come the previous version was able to move the overlay to the 2nd monitor? or wasnt that version using overlay at all?
00:24 dionoea  Bond365: It'd guess the second solution. You're on windows XP?
00:25 Bond365  yes
00:25 dionoea  Bond365: you could try changing the video output from "default" to "directx" in the preferences (and re-enable accelerated video output)
00:25 dionoea  I believe that the default now is direct3d for all windows versions
00:25 dionoea  while in 0.8.6 it was default only for vista
00:25 dionoea  Not sure though
00:26 dionoea  Bond365: anyway, if you feel like it, file a bug report on http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/

00:30 dionoea  hum, some people still use the 0.9.0-test releases on windows: http://www.videolan.org/~videolan/updates/vlc/stats.2008-09-24.txt
00:31 dionoea  we should update the updates file ... but those won't work with the current 0.9.2 release because of the pgp bug :) I guess that it'll have to wait for 0.9.3
00:31 tonsofpcs  heh
00:32 dionoea  0.9.2 is signed with v4 signatures ... and we can't change that to v3 now :/
00:32 xtophe  dionoea: what's wrong with the current update files?
00:32 dionoea  xtophe: didn't you read my pgp fix commit and emails?

00:33 xtophe  well i rad but didn't followed. i assume that having find the problem you generated v3 sigs for the current one
00:34 dionoea  Well we can't change the .asc files we already propagated on all our mirrors
00:34 dionoea  that would look rather bad
00:34 xtophe  dionoea: i don't see the problem
00:34 dionoea  we could have a temporary 0.9.2 host for updates with v3 sigs ... would be a work around
00:34 dionoea  anyway, we should be releasing 0.9.3 soon so it's kind of a non issue

02:22 j-b  please
02:23 jf_n  in foobar its possible to use some variables like %play_count%, %time% and so on (syntax doesnt really matter). you can add "labels" to the guy, and fill those with those variables or strings or whatnot, therby you can clutter your gui with all kinds of random info regarding the media you are playing
02:24 j-b  Ah, ok
02:24 j-b  so, you add labels
02:24 j-b  jf_n: where would you add those in LVC ?
02:24 j-b  VLC ,

02:25 jf_n  to describe "labels": they made the guy fully customizable (not something I want in VLC), you can add all kinds of gui templates to the main window, like 2 playlists and put a bar at the top, populate it with labels or title stuff and so on
02:26 j-b  I won't do that
02:26 j-b  for sure
02:26 jf_n  hehe, dont want it ;)
02:26 j-b  but, I am thinking of buttons customization
02:26 jf_n  but a bar at the bottom, like the status bar, for which you could enable some infos would be nice
02:27 jf_n  OR make the status bar customizable, some clutter to enable
02:27 jf_n  (and disable)
02:27 j-b  ok
02:27 j-b  Didn't thought of that

09:31 zoltra  Good day my dears
09:31 zoltra  I am here again
09:32 j-b  ZOLTAN
09:32 j-b  sorry
09:32 zoltra  I wanna thank you for your support in fixing my issue
09:32 zoltra  related to playing media files with arabic file name
09:32 nybyn  j-b: i've noticed a couple in 0.9.2  ... the media library doesn't save items after restart, vlc hangs when changing audio from stereo to mono (at least on streams.. haven't tested this one much)
09:33 j-b  does'tn save after restart ?
09:33 zoltra  It was because that I have to define a new locale on my system (ar_EG.UTF-8 in my case)
09:33 nybyn  also, the playlist has some strange behaviour, like if you are in tree mode and you add a dir or an item, the first item in the playlist starts playing
09:33 zoltra  Now I have performance issue that I want you to help me
09:34 nybyn  the things i add to the media library aren't there if i close vlc and reopen it

09:35 zoltra  which takes too long time at the startup of the system
09:35 gborzi  hi there, I would like to post a possible bug in trac system
09:35 zoltra  how can I optimize that or to have ar_EG.UTF-8 fixed on my system
09:36 zoltra  so that I won't need to define it each time??????
09:36 j-b  zoltra: ask your distribution
09:36 nybyn  j-b: nevermind about the media library behaviour. i just tried adding something and cycling vlc... it is still there.
09:36 j-b  nybyn: ok, you scared me

09:38 j-b  gborzi: done.
09:38 j-b  nybyn: fixed in 0.9.3
09:38 gborzi  thanks j-b

16:15 feepk  thedj: ehm, well, one patch for swscaler may be borked, but it is save to compile without it
16:15 siretart  Tanguy: in fact yes. ffmpeg upstream's configure has a switch called '--enable-swscale' which disables the internal one and links against libswscale
16:15 thedj  yes, i already removed that.
16:15 thedj  now i have a compile problem with the altivec checks
16:15 siretart  Tanguy: in debian we have some packages that use libswscale and other packages (like vlc 0.8.x) that use the ffmpeg internal scaler
16:16 Tanguy  that is why a patch to enable both?
16:16 siretart  Tanguy: in debian, I've added a patch that provides both ffmpeg's internal AND additionally provides libswscale
16:16 xtophe  Tanguy: the root of the problem is that vlc took 2 year to release.
16:16 xtophe  and in the mean time ffmpeg evolved
16:16 Tanguy  i understand that
16:16 siretart  xtophe: vlc was not the only package, but the most prominent one

16:21 xtophe  Tanguy: well if you use unofficial repo it's your fault
16:21 siretart  Tanguy: partly. the probleme here is a broken 3rd party repository
16:21 Tanguy  yes, it is
16:22 xtophe  siretart: is Fabian Greffrath on some irc chan ?
16:22 Tanguy  but the root problem is the evolution of ffmpeg, or was the enabling libswscale-disable internal scaler already on the previous versions of ffmpeg?
16:23 siretart  xtophe: he doesn't irc AFAIK.
16:23 xtophe  i'll mail then
16:23 siretart  Tanguy: well, that's a question to the ffmpeg developers
16:23 Tanguy  well...
16:23 Tanguy  anyway, i have my solution, now :)
16:23 siretart  Tanguy: according to them, the internal scaler is pretty much crap and  "ill designed"
16:24 siretart  Tanguy: however libswscale is GPL (instead of LGPL as most of the rest of ffmpeg) and terribly written
16:24 thedj  feepk: ah duh, we didn't compile with PPC support before of course.
16:24 siretart  Tanguy: they are currently splitting out the GPL parts and rework libswscale for proper inclusion
16:24 siretart  Tanguy: at that point, the old internal implementation will be dropped
16:25 thedj  with altivec support
16:25 siretart  if you look at the source of libswscale, you'll see what I mean here
16:25 Tanguy  with modifications of that scale, i do not think the shared library should be given the same name, as it completly breaks compatibility, should not it?
16:26 siretart  Tanguy: and it isn't even in the same library
16:26 Tanguy  but as far as i am concerned, i shall build vlc
16:26 Tanguy  :)
16:27 siretart  Tanguy: however if unpatched,  libavcodec51 and libswscale0 would provide the same symbols
16:27 feepk  thedj: we didn't?
16:27 xtophe  siretart: is there a way to umqueue a build from the experimental buildd. because i already know it will fail ?
16:27 siretart  that's one part of what my patch does
16:27 thedj  feepk: no, that was why PPC was so slow.
16:27 thedj  feepk: which is annoying, because we now need to find the version where ffmpeg fixed it's altivec support....
16:28 siretart  xtophe: the best solution is to upload a fixed package
16:28 siretart  xtophe: in order to manipulate the queue you need to get hold of a wanna-build maintainer. for experimental that is 'zobel', 'aba' or 'HE' (well, they are all from the german cabal)

16:28 siretart  at least I think that they admin the experimental wanna-build
16:29 xtophe  siretart: k. other question: to move a package from experimental to sid, does it need a new upload or some magic from the release maintaner ?
16:29 siretart  thedj: FYI, debian' libavcodec package works on both machines with and without altivec. and has altivec support compiled in!
16:29 siretart  xtophe: new upload
16:29 Tanguy  so, is smo_'s mediubuntu problem the same as my debian-unofficial one?
16:30 thedj  siretart: this is for OSX.
16:30 siretart  thedj: the same trick could perhaps work there, too
16:30 thedj  well upgrading to ffmpeg current works too, but i'd rather not.

20:42 geal  j-b: three solutions for the dll problem (from easy to hard): add VLC directory to PATH, add third party dlls in system32 with a refcount, use the side by side assembly installing system
20:42 geal  and all three are doable with nsis

20:44 j-b  Why does npvlc finds libvlc, but doesn't find libz ?
20:44 j-b  moreover, Side by Side assembly is the only way to fix the DivX play er issue
20:44 j-b  namely, DivX player put msvcrt80.dll in the plugins
20:44 j-b  so, VLC tries to open it
20:45 j-b  before taking the good one
20:45 geal  I don't know for libvlc, but libz isn't found because it is requested by libaccess_http_plugin

20:45 j-b  geal: malloc ?
20:45 geal  :)
20:46 j-b  sérieux :D
20:46 geal  rewrite it!
20:46 milo  thedj: if i have any input stream from network (div3 for example) and i want to trascode it on the fly and send it back in other format (mpeg4 for example). But I have not one machine with good iron, but 3 machines ~2 years old. So I have read, that it is possible on one machine to decode div3, another machine can transcode it, and the last machine can encapsulate it and send it back into network.
20:46 j-b  lol
20:46 milo  thedj: so probably between 1. and 2. machine will be transported raw format
20:46 geal  the third solution seems sane, but doing it with nsis is insane

21:00 geal  track number?
21:00 thedj  the latter are used often in temporary situations, startup channels and places where they do a lot of software editing of the TV images.
21:00 luciel  thedj, Right, thanks for clearing that up. *sound 'the more you know' music*
21:01 milo  thedj: I was thinking, that it is possible on one computer to decode div3 to raw (also i was thinking that raw is decapsulated/decoded format), this raw send to another machine, when will be encoded to mpeg4 and encapsulated and send to network
21:01 thedj  milo: yes, but VLC has no "real time streaming format" for the raw step.
21:02-!- CIA-50 [n=CIA@208.69.182.149] has joined #videolan
21:02 thedj  that's because mostly, there is no RAW step. You can only try and make the "intermediate" step as "effecient" for on the fly work as possible.
21:02 thedj  these protocols are mostly proprietary or raw ASI or stuff like that.
21:03 milo  so raw is decapsulated/decoded video with audio ?
21:03 thedj  depends on context.
21:04 thedj  you have RAW audio or RAW video which basically means it is not Encoded but in lossless formats that can be handled with basic arithmatic you could say.
21:05 thedj  sow RAW video and RAW audio == not encoded
21:05 thedj  then you have RAW files. which usually are a single encoded A or V stream that is NOT encapsulated.

21:10 thedj  DimStar: our csri module could only use libasa so far, which we dumped. we now use a pure libass module
21:10 thedj  milo: not as far as I am aware.
21:10 DimStar  thedj, I see.. thanks+
21:12 milo  and is it better for transcoding to have one cpu with 4 cores or 2 cpus with 2 cores ?
21:13 thedj  it's better to have the highest performance on a single core.
21:13 bgmiki  :D
21:13 thedj  and the more you have of those, the better
21:13 thedj  :D
21:14 thedj  (encoding is the most process intensive task, and is usually not spread over multiple cores).
21:14 thedj  so all the other tasks can be spread over cores, but your encoding performance is often the limiting factor because it requires the most individual CPU resources)

23:55 DimStar  j-b can 0.9.3 already be synched out in binaries or shall I do it tomorrow morning?
23:55 j-b  yes
23:55 j-b  I doubt it will change anything
23:56 DimStar  err... I know that 1 || 0 == 0 || 1 :-) but it makes it rather difficult now to choose :-)
23:56 cmoo  Arf, when I see this picture it seem be an basic option, that's why I ask the question.
23:56 j-b  it is not
23:57 DimStar  some brackets missing... it will end up as true == true
